The Huneeus Vintners Chilean portfolio of wines is crafted by a team of expert viticulturists and winemakers, led by highly influential Chilean winemaker Rodrigo Soto. Native to Chile, Rodrigo brings a wealth of international winemaking experience to the Ritual, Primus, Veramonte and Neyen labels. The ultimate goal is quality, and all four diverse properties are poised to be at the forefront of Chile’s fine wine evolution.

Ritual is the Huneeus family’s original, flagship estate on the extreme eastern edge of the Casablanca Valley in Chile. The 800-acre property is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Chilean Coastal Range, and surrounded by 6,000 acres of protected, native forest.

Rodrigo works closely with superstar consultant, Paul Hobbs and renowned terroir specialist, Pedro Parra. His dedication to his wines' sense of place stems from his passion for Pinot Noir (which he honed in Benziger Winery before moving back to his native Chile). His exhaustive research in the vineyards has revealed Pinot's impressive Chilean potential: his grapes' proximity to the ocean and his soils' decomposed granite has proved perfect for growing Pinot Noir. He is a thoughtful student of biodynamics, a protege of Alvaro Espinoza who pioneered many organic and biodynamic practices globally.

Currently he is working on converting Huneeus' vast vineyard holdings to 100% organic and eventually biodynamic - a project of massive scale given the extensive vineyard holdings of Huneeus in the Apalta and Casablanca Valleys. In the winery, he introduced native yeast fermentations and organic nutrients for the yeast. His goal – to offer the clearest, and most complex, expression of the vineyards’ diverse terroirs by naturally making the wines form vine to bottle. There has been ample critical acclaim for Rodrigo's winemaking already, though he has only been back in Chile for the past 4 years. Winemaker Rodrigo Soto will taste us through the following wines:

- 2015 Ritual Sauvignon Blanc (SRP $17.99)
- 2015 Ritual Chardonnay (SRP $19.99)
- 2015 Ritual Pinot Noir (SRP $19.99)

As Chile emerges as the New World’s beacon for organic viticulture and winemaking, Rodrigo Soto has quietly been working over decades as an early visionary winemaker for what is now a widely adopted movement.

Starting – but not ending – with the Ritual portfolio, Rodrigo’s wines are changing both industry and consumer minds regarding what is possible in Chile, and the world of wine. Rodrigo started as an understudy of the first generation of serious organic vine growers and winemakers. Today, he is one of Chile’s, and the wine world’s, leading organic practitioners. Most important, the wines that he is making at Veramonte, Primus, Neyen, and Ritual speak for themselves on an international level - in wine shops, restaurants, and industry circles for their quality alone.

Winemaker Rodrigo Soto

Born in Chile, Rodrigo brings a wealth of international winemaking background to Ritual. He has worked in different wine regions around the globe, including Wither Hills in Marlborough, New Zealand, Chile's Matetic Vineyards (where he designed the cool-climate vineyard and winery from the ground up), and spent 6 years as head winemaker at the well-known Benziger Winery in Sonoma, USA. While there, he led the winemaking program for their vineyard-designated wines and expanded their biodynamic program.

By 2012, Rodrigo was growing homesick for his native Chile. The Huneeus family, also native to Chile, had already converted two of their California properties, Quintessa and Flowers, to organic and biodynamic farming, and they were looking for the right person to convert their four flagship Chilean properties, Veramonte, Primus, Neyen, and Ritual. Rodrigo was the perfect fit.

As soon as he arrived back to Chile, Rodrigo set out to convert all four properties to organic and biodynamic farming. He didn’t stop in the vineyard. In the winery, he introduced native yeast fermentations and organic nutrients for the yeast. His goal – to offer the clearest, and most complex, expression of the vineyards’ diverse terroirs by naturally making the wines from vine to bottle.

His experiences have allowed him to develop a keen understanding of terroir, honing his winemaking skills and fueling his passion to produce wines that express a sense of place.

2015 Ritual Sauvignon Blanc

the appellation: casablanca valley

The Casablanca Valley is a cool climate area on the northwestern side of Chile’s coastal range less than 30 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. Our estate occupies the extreme eastern end of the valley and is noted for its gentle Pacific breezes and early morning fog, making it the ideal climate for producing cool climate varietals.

Ritual Sauvignon Blanc comes from the coolest part of our estate, giving us fresh fruit flavors with bright acidity.

the vintage

The 2015 vintage produced great quality fruit due to low yields and our Mediterranean climate, with a wide difference of temperatures between day and night. Slow ripening of the grapes allowed to preserve their freshness, flavor, aromas, and an elegant acidity.

the wine

Intense citrus and floral notes are combined with flavors of white peaches and nectarines that are enhanced by the well integrated acidity. It’s long and vibrant with an impeccable clean smooth finish.

winemaker’s notes

Grapes are hand harvested at night, maximizing freshness
and vibrancy with whole cluster pressing directly into concrete eggs, neutral barrels and stainless steel barrels. This allows us to try different techniques during fermentation in terms of temperatures and cloudiness of the juice, which reveals varying aromatics making this wine very expressive and unique.
After fermentation, we stir the lees every two weeks for eight months, obtaining a smooth and complex mouthfeel, without losing its freshness.

varietal composition: 100% sauvignon blanc alcohol: 14%
oak: 30% neutral oak, 30% concrete eggs, 40% stainless steel tanks

An elegant wine of yellow-green color, with expressive aromas of quince, apple and hazelnut notes intertwined with subtle hints of oak and vanilla. Soft, elegant and creamy texture with a remarkable roundness and a long finish.

winemaker’s notes

Our estate occupies the extreme eastern end of the valley and is noted for its gentle Pacific breezes and early morning fog, making it the ideal climate for producing cool climate varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Ritual Pinot Noir is a meticulous selection of specific vineyard lots and barrel selections from 20 hectares of Pinot Noir planted in the coolest sections of our Casablanca Valley Estate property vineyard estate.

the 2015 vintage

Harvest 2015 had a very positive development, and yields within expected. The season was marked by a very beneficial rainfall at the beginning, great for the evolution of the vines. Weather conditions and extended temperature range between day and night allowed for slow ripening of the grapes, maintaining excellent quality of fruit and freshness. These conditions, together with careful vineyard management resulted in elegant notes and a complex aromatic profile.

the wine

A medium-bodied Pinot Noir with remarkable floral, cranberry and raspberry aromas. In the mouth, bright fruit flavors with a wonderful texture and extraordinary acidity. Smooth and balanced with a silky, velvety finish.

winemaker’s notes

The grapes are hand-harvested in small batches at first light in the cool morning and carefully double-sorted. A portion of the fruit undergoes whole-cluster fermentation to increase structure and complexity. Ritual Pinot Noir is fermented with wild yeast to increase depth, intensity and complexity. Malolactic fermentation and 10 months in French oak increase elegance and richness.
